Early this morning of February 8,2011, the courageous Secretary Angelo Reyes put an end to his precious life. Together with his two sons, he visited the tomb of his parents in Loyola Memorial Park. A few moments later, he instructed his driver and children to leave him alone and wait for him in the car. Suddenly, gunfire was heard leading them to return to the scene and saw the body of the former Secretary dead. He was rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City but pronounced DOA.
The strong man of the PMA, at 65, the former Chief of Staff of the AFP was a picture of courage and determination. Nobody in the military rooster ever dared to think of the tragic event. Sec. Reyes was a person of good disposition and moderate temper. Who would ever expect such a tragedy? Using his .45 caliber pistol, he made an instant period for all the scandalous allegations of his former colleagues in the military service. The involvement of his immediate family especially his wife Tess, in the corruption scandal couldn't be taken by the General thus, his move to put end to everything. Some reliable informant said, he wouldn't believe his men to put him down. While being interrogated in the Senate, he strongly defended the previous Administration and he preffered to keep silent rather than mentioning names. He said he'll face everything alone.
Followers who kept abreast of the investigation in the corruption in AFP said he was a missing piece in the series of hearings being conducted by the committee. Some intellectual believed his death will only give strong motivation for the cleansing of the AFP. The suicide was an acceptance of the truth but repentance is never needed, instead making another wrongdoing which is his own bright idea. Just to think of it General Reyes was the one who tarnished his name in front of God and his men in uniform, such a lousy deed from a well-respected man.
